Harris Tweed is a fabric protected by an Act of Parliament. By law, only skilled craftspersons from the Outer Hebrides are permitted to make this tweed. This tweed is hand woven on a treadle loom at each weaver's home on the Isle of Lewis, not at a mill. Furthermore the wool is dyed prior to being spun as opposed to dying the yarn to create a myriad of intricate shades and hues. The final process is the examination by the independent Harris Tweed Authority before the Harris Tweed Orb Trademark can be applied as their seal of approval.
